With martial arts superstars like Jackie Chan and Jet Li, writer John Fusco and
director Rob Minkoff definatly had to step up to the plate. However they did so beautifully. The Forbidden Kingdom originally
takes place in Boston, MA where a white, culturally confused, and very awkward kid named Jason tries to immerse
himself into the world of Kung Fu. And he does so quite literally. After stealing a staff from an old man in a pawn shop,
Jason finds himself thrusted into an alternate reality, where he is the carrier of said staff and he must return
it to his rightful owner.
This movie is great for all ages: the little kid who dreams of beating
up the next door neighbor kid, or even the college freshman who keeps getting tossed into trashcans, we all aspire to be the
next kung fu master. It is for this reason why The Forbidden Kingdom has stayed #1 at the box offices for so long; they know
how to appeal to the masses.
The fight sequences of this movie are
fantastic, some of the best directing seen in a long time. Rob Minkoff actually has a revolutionary style of holding the camera
still during a fight scene so that the audience can actually see what is going on. Yet this movie does have that
Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon feel to it when the bad guys are running on the tops of cherry blossom trees or when
we see Jet Li jumping from column to column in his infamous fight scene with Jackie Chan (reason in itself to see the movie).
Overall this movie was spectacular and if you even remotely like fantasy/action thrillers, go see this movie.
